TIM Cellular SA is a Brazilian holding company that provides telecommunication services through its subsidiaries, TIM Cellular and Intelig Telecomunicações. It provides mobile, fixed and long distance telephony as well as data transmission services, primarily using GSM technology, throughout Brazil. It offers value-added services, including short message services or text messaging, multimedia messaging services, push-mail, Blackberry service, video call, turbo mail, wireless application protocol (WAP) downloads, web browsing, and business data solutions, among others. TIM Participações is a subsidiary of TIM Brasil Serviços e Participações, a company owned by Telecom Italia. The company started operations in 1998 and is based in Rio de Janeiro. In 2014, the company launched a package granting customers unlimited use of the OTT messaging service WhatsApp, in which they can use the app while in TIM's 3G or 4G network without affecting their contracted amount of MB or GB. The deal is the first between WhatsApp and a Brazilian operator.
