Vodafone and Ericsson Trial 5G Standalone Network Slicing for Mobile Gaming

Vodafone and Ericsson have conducted a live network trial at Coventry University to demonstrate the capabilities of 5G Standalone network slicing for mobile gaming. Network slicing is a feature of 5G Standalone networks that allows for customized connectivity services for specific customers and use cases.

During the trial, participants experienced a 270 percent increase in throughput, a 25 percent decrease in latency, a 57 percent reduction in jitter, and smoother graphics rendering. This improved experience was made possible by an isolated 5G Standalone network slice optimized for cloud gaming.

The trial results indicated a significant difference in participant satisfaction between the two scenarios. In Scenario A, which mirrored the performance of an existing public mobile network, only 13 percent of participants ranked their satisfaction above 8 out of 10. In contrast, Scenario B, with the isolated 5G Standalone network slice, saw 88 percent of participants ranking their satisfaction above 8 out of 10.

Post-trial focus groups revealed that mobile gaming enthusiasts were particularly interested in the 5G Standalone gaming experience because of faster loading times, reduced latency, and improved graphics rendering, which gave them a competitive advantage over fellow players.

Ericsson predicts that 25-30 percent of potential 5G use cases will require network slicing to achieve their full potential. This trial highlights the significance of 5G Standalone and network slicing in enabling new use cases and experiences for consumers and businesses. The scalability and quality-of-service management advancements provided by these technologies open up new revenue opportunities for communication service providers.

Overall, this trial showcases the transformative capabilities of 5G Standalone network slicing in mobile gaming and highlights the potential for enhanced connectivity services in various sectors.
