VIAVI Solutions Announces Base Station and End-to-End Testing for Non-Terrestrial Networks and High Altitude Platforms

Viavi Solutions Inc. (VIAVI) has announced that their TM500 and TeraVM test platforms are now available for base station and end-to-end testing supporting Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) and High Altitude Platforms (HAPs). The utilization of wireless technologies is increasingly enhancing traditional terrestrial communication networks, with satellite communications playing a major role in providing widespread coverage.

The TM500 and TeraVM test platforms ensure the conformance, performance, and reliability of gNodeBs and entire networks under the unique service link conditions of NTN and HAPs networks.

The specifications introduced in 3GPP Release 17 have formally provided support and guidelines for NTNs. Furthermore, subsequent releases are expected to further refine the standards. These specifications will not only improve the performance of NTNs but also facilitate their convergence with terrestrial telecom networks and enable support across existing 5G mobile handsets and chipsets. The growth in satellite communications is predicted to lead to approximately 30,000 new satellites orbiting the Earth, significantly expanding the potential of NTNs to provide coverage on a universal scale.

The integration of satellite communication in 5G testing introduces an additional layer of complexity. NTNs need to be reliable in order to handle the distance, speed, and mobility of satellites, HAPs, and User Equipment (UE), while still maintaining optimal performance. Test solutions need to be able to emulate various UE mobility and fading profiles while also accounting for the large doppler shifts from fast-moving satellites and airborne platforms.

The TM500 is capable of emulating high device volumes, new mobility patterns, signal propagation delays, and other unique conditions of NTN prior to non-terrestrial deployments. On the other hand, TeraVM emulates the core network for testing scenarios, making it ideal for early functional tests such as 3GPP protocol testing. These test scenarios can be applied to regenerative and transparent architectures. Additionally, further test scenarios focus on testing and optimizing the entire network end-to-end, using a real core for validating performance and reliability.

NTNs present new opportunities and partnerships for mobile and satellite operators. They have the potential to provide connectivity to underserved and overpopulated areas, as well as support mission-critical applications. However, in order to ensure success, it is crucial to conduct reliability, stability, and performance testing amidst the growing interest and deployment of these networks.

VIAVI is a global provider of network test, monitoring, and assurance solutions for various industries including communications service providers, equipment manufacturers, enterprises, and government agencies. They are committed to finding innovative solutions to real-world problems and are dedicated to achieving success in the ever-evolving landscape of network technologies.
