UK ISP 6G Internet Misled Consumers with Non-Existent Technology Claims, Says Regulator

UK ISP 6G Internet has been found in violation by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) after claims that consumers may have been misled by its advertising of a “non-existent future mobile technology.” Despite providing detailed descriptions of its “full fibre directly to your home” fixed line product, the regulator ruled that customers might have misunderstood the offering.

6G Internet Limited, the company behind the ISP, defended itself by stating that it was incorporated in England and Wales in 2013 and provided evidence from Companies House to support this claim. However, the ASA concluded that the ads made references to “full fibre speed broadband only” and that customers with limited understanding of broadband technology might think it related to an innovative 6G mobile internet technology.

The ISP clarified that it delivered internet services over networks operated by group companies utilizing full fibre distribution, core networks, and fixed wireless technology in the local access network since 2019. They argued that their webpages and ads clearly indicated their offering was for home internet and not a future mobile network.

The concept of 6G technology is still in its early stages, with 5G yet to be fully implemented. The successor to 5G, 6G is estimated to be commercially available around 2030. Currently, network operators are focusing on developing 5G Standalone (SA) architecture, which will provide faster speeds and enhanced reliability.

While 6G Internet has generally received positive ratings on Trustpilot, there have been instances of customers expressing concern over the company’s claims of offering 6G internet when the technology does not exist. The ISP’s parent company, IX Wireless, has also faced criticism for mast and pole placements in northern England.

The Reg has reached out to 6G Internet for comment, including inquiring about potential name changes.
