Tonga Ravaged by Devastating Tsunami

On January 15, 2022, Tonga experienced a devastating tsunami caused by an underwater volcano eruption. The force of the eruption was so powerful that it surpassed the energy equivalent of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima during World War II. Residents on the island felt their ears ringing as they desperately sought safety, while ash and dust settled on trees and structures.

The aftermath of the tsunami proved to be challenging for Tonga, as the island, with a population of 100,200, was left mostly isolated from the rest of the world. The Southern Cross Cable, responsible for connecting Tonga to the internet, was damaged, exacerbating the isolation.

Malia Fuimaono, a Tonga resident who was in Fiji at the time of the disaster, found herself stranded as she awaited a repatriation flight back to Tonga after completing her studies. The loss of communication and power was a distressing experience for Fuimaono and many others affected by the tsunami.

Efforts to recover and rebuild began as soon as possible. However, the damage caused by the tsunami and subsequent disruption in communication made it even more challenging for aid to reach the affected areas. It was a race against time to provide assistance, especially considering the remote location of Tonga.

The international community rallied to help Tonga in its time of need. Humanitarian organizations, neighboring countries, and international bodies all extended support by providing resources, expert assistance, and financial aid.

The road to recovery for Tonga will be long and arduous, but with the collective effort of the global community, the island nation will rebuild and regain its strength. It serves as a reminder of the power of natural disasters and the importance of solidarity in times of crisis.
