This Week in Washington IP News: International IP Event in Brazil, Impact of EU Regulations on U.S. Businesses, and 5G Patent Race

This week, we turn our attention to international developments in intellectual property. Congress is still on summer recess, so we look abroad to Brazil, where the Brazilian Intellectual Property Association (ABPI) is hosting the largest international intellectual property event in Latin America. The 43rd International Intellectual Property Congress will feature speakers from around the world and cover various topics, including the Unified Patent Court and Patent for Inclusion. USPTO Director Kathi Vidal will be speaking at the closing event on Tuesday.

In the United States, the USPTO is hosting a four-day online training course called “Inventors: Learn to Think Like a Patent Examiner” starting this Tuesday. This course aims to help inventors gain insight into how patent examiners make their decisions. Each day, a different module will be available, starting with the process of reading a patent application for the first time.

On the same day, IPWatchdog is hosting a webinar titled “Who is Leading the 5G Patent Race?” The discussion will focus on the competitive landscape of the 5G patent race and the implications for companies and countries vying for technical leadership in critical technologies. The panel will include industry experts such as Dr. Tim Pohlmann from IPlytics, Robert Giles from Qualcomm, Tuomas Saukkonen from Nokia, and Mang Zhu from ZTE USA.

Later in the week, the PTAB Inventor Hour, an online webinar series, will feature Scott Boalick, Chief Judge for the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), as a special guest. This episode aims to provide inventors, entrepreneurs, and new practitioners with a deeper understanding of the USPTO and the PTAB. It will also mark the second anniversary of the Inventor Hour.

Lastly, the Cato Institute will host an online panel discussion on Thursday titled “The Brussels Effect: How EU and UK Tech Policy Impacts Americans and American Companies.” Industry experts will delve into the impact of increasing tech market regulations in the UK and EU, specifically focusing on the effect it will have on U.S. companies. The panelists will discuss how this regulation could impact competition and U.S. tech policy.

These events provide valuable insights into international intellectual property issues, from patent awards and 5G patents to the impact of regulations on tech companies.
