The Most Popular TV Reception Methods in Germany

DTH satellite and cable TV are the most commonly used methods for TV reception in Germany. According to the study Video Trends 2023, conducted by the German media authorities and released at the Medientage München 2023 conference, 16.4 million households in Germany use DTH satellite TV, accounting for 42% of TV households. This number is expected to increase to 43% by 2022.

Cable TV subscriptions are used by 15.9 million households, which corresponds to 41% of TV households. The growth in exclusive TV reception via the internet (OTT) is significant, with 3.1 million households, or 8% of households, opting for this method, compared to 6% in 2022.

IPTV and DTT (Digital Terrestrial Television) remain unchanged at 4.6 million (12%) and 2.1 million (6%) households, respectively.

When including TV reception on PC/laptop and mobile devices, there is growth in terrestrial TV reception. Approximately 5.9 million households, corresponding to 15% of TV households, watch TV via DTT. This represents a 37% increase compared to 2019.

The study also highlights the importance of securing frequencies for terrestrial television beyond 2030. From a consumer perspective, it is crucial for politics to ensure the continuity of terrestrial television. Additionally, the development of 5G Broadcast, with its focus on mobile video use, is seen as a positive step forward. The terrestrial transmission infrastructure will continue to play a vital role in providing consumer-friendly, energy-efficient, and crisis-proof distribution of audiovisual content in the future.

The use of DTH satellite and cable TV remains dominant in Germany. However, the growth in OTT and terrestrial TV reception indicates that consumer preferences are evolving, and there is a shift towards internet-based TV viewing.
