Tata Play Launches GSAT-24 Satellite for Enhanced DTH Services

Tata Play has collaborated with NSIL (NewSpace India Limited) to launch the GSAT-24 satellite in alignment with the Government’s Make in India vision. The satellite was launched in June 2022 and is now operational in its designated orbital position.

The GSAT-24 satellite will provide increased bandwidth, allowing Tata Play to offer users a sharper picture and sound quality. It will also enable the platform to carry 50% more channels, making it the largest satellite bandwidth provider among all DTH platforms.

The inauguration ceremony took place at Tata Play’s Broadcast Centre in Chhatarpur, New Delhi. Shri. Apurva Chandra, Secretary Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, expressed his happiness and congratulated DoS and Tata Play for the successful commissioning of GSAT-24. He emphasized that this achievement contributes to the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative and self-reliance in the space and communication sector.

Shri. S. Somanath, Chairman ISRO, mentioned that GSAT-24 is a 4-tonne class communication satellite fully operational at its maximum satellite capacity. It has undergone extensive in-orbit testing and signifies a revolution in India’s telecommunications space. This accomplishment showcases India’s aerospace prowess and marks the successful entry into the Demand Driven Mission segment.

Shri. Radhakrishnan Durairaj, Chairman and Managing Director of NSIL, described GSAT-24 as the first Demand Driven communication satellite mission undertaken by NSIL after the space sector reforms. He stated that the satellite will usher in a new era of satellite television in India, supporting domestic broadcasting services with advanced digital TV transmission capabilities.

Tata Play’s MD & CEO, Harit Nagpal, emphasized the company’s commitment to providing an excellent viewing experience for its DTH subscribers. The collaboration with NSIL will result in better video and audio quality and an increased number of channels and services. Tata Play has always used indigenously produced satellites by the Department of Space (DoS), and this capacity enhancement further demonstrates their commitment to the Make in India initiative.

GSAT-24 is a 24-Ku band communication satellite launched specifically to cater to the requirements of Tata Play’s DTH applications. NSIL, a Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) under the Department of Space, is the commercial arm of DoS. The entire satellite capacity of GSAT-24 is leased to Tata Play, solidifying their partnership.
