There are several sci-fi shows available on Amazon Prime Video that can be watched with just a base Amazon Prime subscription. Here are a few Amazon Originals that are perfect for laid-back, summer viewing.

“The Peripheral” is an executive-produced show by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, the creators of “Westworld.” Set in the future, the series follows Flynne, who believes she is playing an advanced version of a VR game. However, she soon discovers that she is piloting a robot in the near future through quantum tunneling. As she delves deeper into the virtual experience, she realizes that the dangers within the game affect her present life. “The Peripheral” has been renewed for a second season.

“The Power” focuses on teenage girls who discover their ability to electrocute people from their fingertips. They use this power to fight against injustices, leading to a shift in the balance of society. The show stars Toni Collette, Auli’i Cravalho, John Leguizamo, and Toheeb Jimoh. Although there is no word on a second season yet, “The Power” received favorable reviews for its interesting premise.

“Night Sky” follows a couple living in a remote town who have a portal to another world under their land. They frequently visit this world, uncovering conspiracies and encountering secret organizations. Starring Sissy Spacek and J.K. Simmons, the show features twists and turns, centering around a young man named Jude. “Night Sky” lasted for one season.

“Upload” imagines a future where consciousness and bodies are uploaded to a digital afterlife. The show explores a commercialized afterlife that mirrors the economic divide of the real world. Nathan, the main character, is uploaded after a car accident and must navigate his new existence. “Upload” focuses on his relationship with a customer service rep named Nora and highlights parodies of online culture and AI. The show has been renewed for a third season.

“Paper Girls” takes place in the 1980s and follows four young girls caught in a time-traveling war. While delivering newspapers after Halloween, they end up traveling through time and meeting future versions of themselves. Forced to make difficult decisions, the girls confront their potential fates and futures. Although the show was favorably reviewed, it was canceled after the first season.

These sci-fi shows provide plenty of entertainment and may be a great choice for summer viewing.
