Plans for 5G Mast in Mansfield Could Face Refusal Due to Size Concerns

Plans for a 15-meter high 5G telecoms mast in Mansfield, England, may be rejected due to concerns about its size and impact on the character of the neighborhood. The proposal, put forward by CK Hutchison Ltd, includes the construction of the mast and three equipment cabinets to improve internet signal in the area. However, the Mansfield District Council’s planning committee is recommending refusal of the plans as the mast is considered to be an “unsympathetic” and “excessive” structure that could harm the visual amenity and character of the locality.

Cllr Stuart Richardson, who represents the Penniment ward where the project is located, objected to the plans during the consultation period. He expressed concerns about the visual impact of the mast, its impact on adjacent trees, and the overall character of the area. Local residents have also raised objections, with 76 objections received by the council. Some concerns include potential health effects on nearby schools, visual impact, construction traffic, and the impact of 5G on household appliances.

In response to health concerns, the applicant has stated that 5G technology is as safe as previous generations of cellular networks. The addition of more 5G cells actually reduces the distance the signal has to travel, resulting in less power needed at the smartphone and base station for a reliable connection. The applicant also emphasized that small 5G base stations can reduce radio wave exposure for individual smartphone users and improve local capacity for bandwidth-intensive applications.

Despite acknowledging the economic and social benefits of the proposed mast, the planning department of the council recommends refusal based on its excessive height, inappropriate siting, and unsympathetic design. The UK Health Security Agency, responsible for monitoring the health effects of 5G mast technology, states that while there may be a small increase in overall exposure to radio waves with the addition of 5G, it is expected to remain low relative to guidelines and should not have consequences for public health.
