North Korea May Take Military Action in Protest of US-South Korea-Japan Summit, Says South Korean Lawmaker

North Korea is reportedly considering launching an intercontinental ballistic missile or engaging in other military actions to express its opposition to a summit between the United States, South Korea, and Japan. The information was revealed by a South Korean lawmaker who cited the country’s intelligence agency.

The upcoming meeting at Camp David between US President Joe Biden, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida aims to strengthen ties between Seoul and Tokyo, particularly in light of the nuclear threats posed by North Korea and China’s influence in the region.

North Korea views the increased military cooperation among the three nations as a dangerous precursor to the establishment of an “Asian version of NATO.” In addition to the possible military action, the reclusive state may also attempt to launch another spy satellite at the end of August or early September. Previous attempts in May to put their first satellite into space were unsuccessful.

According to Yoo Sang-bum, a member of the South Korean parliament, there is a chance that North Korea will attempt this satellite launch to commemorate its founding anniversary on September 9. Yoo also noted that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has expressed intentions to conduct a launch during the second half of this year.

Furthermore, South Korean intelligence has reported that North Korea and Russia have agreed on broad defense cooperation. The agreement was reached during a meeting between the Russian defense minister and Kim Jong Un, where they also watched a military parade together in Pyongyang.

The South Korean National Intelligence Service is closely monitoring any potential movements that could indicate a transfer of nuclear missile technology from Russia to North Korea. The United States has previously accused North Korea of supplying weapons to Russia for its involvement in the war in Ukraine, allegations that have been denied by both Pyongyang and Moscow.
