North Korea Attempted Satellite Launch in Violation of UN Resolutions, says US

North Korea’s recent attempt to launch a satellite has been deemed a violation of UN Security Council resolutions, according to statements from the US State Department and the White House. Despite the failure of the launch, the United States has expressed a desire for dialogue with Pyongyang without preconditions.

The State Department spokesperson urged North Korea to refrain from further threatening activities, while the White House stated that diplomacy was still an option but emphasized the need for North Korea to stop its provocative actions and choose engagement.

The US President Joe Biden’s national security team is closely coordinating with allies and partners to assess the situation. The White House highlighted the importance of all countries condemning North Korea’s launch attempt.

The White House condemned North Korea for using ballistic missile technology in its launch, stating that it violated multiple UN Security Council resolutions and escalated tensions, posing a risk to regional and global security.

North Korea’s second attempt to place a spy satellite in orbit failed due to a problem with its booster’s third stage, as reported by state media. However, North Korea’s space authorities have expressed their intention to try again in October. Their first attempt in May also ended in failure.

North Korea has expressed its goal of placing its first military spy satellite into orbit to monitor the activities of US and South Korean troops. The international community has shown concern, both about North Korea’s satellite launches and its weapons tests.

The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to ensure the security of itself, South Korea, and its Japanese allies. The State Department highlighted that space launch vehicles incorporate technologies used in ballistic missiles, including intercontinental ballistic missiles, which violate multiple UN Security Council resolutions.
