Leviton, a leading smart lighting manufacturer, has released the Decora Smart Wi-Fi Outdoor Plug-in Switch. This outdoor smart plug is the first of its kind to support Matter, the new smart home interoperability standard developed by Apple, Amazon, Google, and Samsung.

The Decora Smart Wi-Fi Outdoor Plug-in Switch is priced at .99 and is available for purchase on Amazon and The Home Depot. It is part of Leviton’s Decora Smart Wi-Fi lighting and load control line and is the fifth Leviton product to support Matter.

This outdoor smart plug operates on a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network and offers simple on/off functionality without dimming capabilities. It includes a built-in light sensor, allowing users to automate their outdoor lights to turn on at night and off during the day. This feature makes the plug useful right out of the box without requiring any programming or app usage.

The Decora Outdoor Plug-in Switch can be paired with Leviton’s Anywhere Switch Companion, a wire-free remote control that can be wall-mounted. This makes it easier to control the plug from inside the house, a feature not commonly found in other plugs in this price range.

The Leviton plug is compatible with Leviton’s own app, Apple Home through Matter, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings. It supports 120V, 60Hz, and 15A general-purpose loads, as well as motor loads up to 3/4HP.

Matter is a new smart home interoperability standard that enables devices to communicate locally without relying on cloud connections. It uses Wi-Fi and Thread wireless protocols and supports various smart home devices, including sensors, lighting, plugs, switches, thermostats, locks, and media devices.

With support for Matter, the Leviton Decora Smart Wi-Fi Outdoor Plug-in Switch can seamlessly connect and work with any Matter-compatible devices and platforms, including Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings. To use the plug with Matter, users will need a Matter controller from their preferred platform.

In addition to Matter compatibility, the Decora Smart Wi-Fi Outdoor Plug-in Switch is certified to work with Alexa, Google Home, Samsung SmartThings, IFTTT, and Schlage. It also offers advanced features through the My Leviton app, such as scene control, schedules, and an auto shut-off timer.

Compared to other outdoor smart plugs like Lutron’s Caséta, the Leviton plug offers a similar design and durability but at a more affordable price. The Leviton plug operates over Wi-Fi, while the Lutron plug requires a proprietary hub for most smart features. The Leviton plug also has a wider operating temperature range, allowing it to handle colder temperatures.

While Lutron has not announced Matter support, it is a member of the Connectivity Standards Alliance, which oversees the Matter standard. Lutron plugs already work with various platforms, but many features require their proprietary hub.
