Isro’s NewSpace India Limited collaborates with Tata Play for DTH services

Isro’s commercial arm, NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), has partnered with Tata Play to enable the direct-to-home (DTH) service provider to start beaming television channels from the Gsat-24 satellite. The Gsat-24 satellite, dedicated to Tata Play, was launched last year and all of its capacity is leased to the DTH service provider. This collaboration will help Tata Play increase its carrying capacity to 900 channels and expand its coverage across the country, including remote areas like Andaman Nicobar and Lakshsdweep islands. The increased bandwidth will result in improved picture and sound quality for users.

The Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Apurva Chandra, praised the collaboration and mentioned that Tata Play currently offers 600 channels, which will now be expanded to 900 with the addition of the Isro satellite. He emphasized that this partnership is in line with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of privatization and the establishment of NSIL. Gsat-24 is a 24-Ku band communication satellite, weighing 4,180 kg, and was launched from French Guiana on June 22, 2022. Isro Chairman S Somanath expressed pride in India’s telecommunications advancements, driven by indigenous technology, and highlighted India’s successful entry into the demand-driven mission segment.

NSIL CMD Radhakrishnan Durairaj hailed Gsat-24 as the first demand-driven communication satellite mission undertaken by NSIL after space sector reforms. He emphasized that the satellite will revolutionize satellite television services in India, supporting domestic broadcasting services with advanced digital TV transmission capabilities. Tata Play’s Managing Director and CEO, Harit Nagpal, stated that enhancing the viewing experience has been their priority, and the collaboration with NSIL will provide DTH subscribers with better video and audio quality, more channels, and additional services. He also reiterated their commitment to the “Make in India” initiative, as all their services have been delivered on domestically-produced satellites.

This collaboration between Isro’s NSIL and Tata Play marks a significant milestone in the field of telecommunications in India and paves the way for enhanced DTH services throughout the country.
