Intelsat Receives .67 Billion for Clearing C-Band Spectrum for 5G

Intelsat has completed the necessary FCC certification and will receive “accelerated relocation payments” totaling .67 billion for clearing the C-band spectrum for 5G telecommunications in the United States. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) had set deadlines for satellite operators to clear the spectrum, offering incentive payments to facilitate the process.

The clearing of the C-band spectrum, specifically the mid-range of 3.7 – 3.82 GHz and the remaining 180 MHz of 3.82 – 4.0 GHz, was mandated by the FCC to enable the use of the spectrum for terrestrial 5G services. Intelsat, as the largest holder of C-band licenses, played a key role in this transition.

Intelsat’s CEO, Dave Wajsgras, stated that the company’s C-band transition not only promotes broader 5G services in the United States but also strengthens their financial position. He expressed pride in the Intelsat team for achieving this milestone ahead of expectations. Wajsgras also mentioned that part of the proceeds will be used to reduce the company’s debt, while the remainder will create value and opportunities for all stakeholders.

In total, Intelsat was eligible to receive up to .87 billion in incentive payments for meeting the Commission’s deadlines. These payments were funded by winning bids from wireless operators in the FCC’s public C-band auction. Intelsat had previously collaborated with Maxar Technologies and Northrop Grumman to design and manufacture satellites required for the transition.

The clearing of the C-band spectrum is vital for accommodating the demand for 5G in the United States. With this milestone, Intelsat remains a leader in the satellite communications industry as they continue to transform their company for the future.
