Intel Regains CPU Market Share in PCs, AMD Gains Share in Servers: Report

According to the latest x86 CPU market share report from Mercury Research, Intel regained a few points of CPU market share in PCs and lost a few points in servers against its rival, AMD, in the second quarter. While AMD’s x86 market share in the PC segment grew slightly, Intel’s share of 82.7 percent was 6.4 points higher than it was a year ago.

Intel’s share gain in PCs can be attributed to significant growth in entry-level mobile CPUs used primarily in Chromebooks. Intel’s year-on-year share gain was driven by the demand for Chromebooks, which saw a significant increase in the past two quarters. On the other hand, AMD experienced the opposite trend in the server segment, with its x86 CPU share growing 4.6 points year-on-year to 18.6 percent against Intel.

Both Intel and AMD saw increases in their higher-end data center-oriented processors in the second quarter. However, Intel lost share in the quarter due to lower shipments for single-socket Xeon processors and CPUs tuned for networking and storage workloads.

In terms of overall market growth, the CPU market grew in the second quarter, with desktop and mobile client CPUs up more than 20 percent, which is atypical for this period. This growth can be attributed to the rebounding PC segment and the increasing demand for replacement devices, particularly Chromebooks, in educational institutions.

The report also noted that ARM CPUs’ share in the PC segment declined in the second quarter, partly due to contracting revenues for Apple’s Mac computers. Despite the decline, both Intel and AMD grew their PC segment share against ARM.

Overall, these market share movements reflect the depth and timing of inventory corrections by Intel and AMD, and it is expected that end-user sales will be better reflected in share movements closer to the end of the year.
