India’s First Satellite-Based Giga Fiber Service Launched by Reliance Jio

Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited has successfully demonstrated India’s first satellite-based giga fiber service, named JioSpaceFiber. The demonstration took place at the India Mobile Congress, showcasing the new satellite broadband technology that will provide high-speed broadband services to previously inaccessible areas in India.

With the addition of JioSpaceFiber, Jio now offers a comprehensive lineup of broadband services, including JioFiber and JioAirFiber. This move aims to accelerate digital inclusivity by providing reliable, low latency, and high-speed internet and entertainment services to every household in India, regardless of their location.

Jio has partnered with SES, a leading satellite communications company, to access the latest medium earth orbit (MEO) satellite technology. Using a combination of SES’s O3b and O3b mPOWER satellites, Jio is able to deliver truly unique gigabit, fiber-like services from space. This technology will enable Jio to provide scalable and affordable broadband across the entire country with unprecedented reliability and service flexibility.

To showcase the capabilities of JioSpaceFiber, four remote locations in India have already been connected: Gir in Gujarat, Korba in Chattisgarh, Nabrangpur in Odisha, and ONGC-Jorhat in Assam. This demonstrates the power and reach of the satellite-based broadband service.

Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, expressed his excitement about JioSpaceFiber, stating that it will allow everyone in India to fully participate in the new digital society by providing gigabit access to online government, education, health, and entertainment services.

John-Paul Hemingway, Chief Strategy Officer at SES, also emphasized the significance of this collaboration with Jio in supporting the Indian government’s Digital India initiative. He highlighted that the fiber-like services from space are already deployed in parts of India and will contribute to the digital transformation of even the most rural areas in the country.

The launch of India’s first satellite-based giga fiber service by Reliance Jio marks a significant milestone in expanding broadband connectivity and bridging the digital divide across the country.
