Gaza Crisis: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirms ground incursion

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared that a ground incursion into Gaza is imminent, calling the current airstrikes “just the beginning.” As images from satellites reveal the destruction caused by Israel’s bombs in Gaza, there is growing pressure on the international community to take action and allow aid into the region. Netanyahu stated that Israel has already eliminated thousands of terrorists and that preparations are underway for a ground incursion, but the timing will be determined by Israel’s War Cabinet.

Netanyahu also acknowledged the intelligence failures that led to the worst terror attack in Israeli history and pledged to provide answers once the war is over. Israel is determined to eliminate Hamas, the militant group controlling Gaza, in response to the deadly terror attacks and kidnapping that took place on October 7. The retaliatory air assault has caused significant devastation to the densely populated enclave, which was already described as an “open-air prison” prior to the conflict.

New satellite images show widespread destruction across northern Gaza, with entire neighborhoods flattened in eastern Beit Hanoun and other areas. The bombardment has been especially severe in the northern part of the region, but there is no safe area, according to a CNN producer in Gaza. The strikes have led to a significant number of casualties, with over 6,400 people killed and 17,000 injured, according to Hamas-controlled health authorities in Gaza.

The crisis has had a devastating impact on hospitals, which are overwhelmed and lacking supplies to properly care for the injured. Overcrowded UN shelters are also posing challenges, severely limiting access to basic assistance and essential services. The UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) has warned that it will have to halt aid operations within a day if fuel is not delivered, which would deprive civilians of a lifeline.

Efforts to address the crisis at the international level have faced obstacles, with the UN Security Council divided on how to proceed. Resolutions calling for humanitarian pauses and aid access have failed to pass. However, some countries, including the European Union and Qatar, are advocating for a short humanitarian pause. The ongoing hostage crisis, involving individuals from multiple countries, adds further complexity to the situation.
