Galgorm and Castlerock excluded from future golf schedules

The DP World Tour recently released their schedule for 2024, which revealed that Galgorm and Castlerock will no longer be included as venues for future tournaments. It is expected that this omission will also apply to the LPGA and LET schedules. The World Invitational, a tri-sanctioned event featuring equal men’s and women’s fields, had been held since 2019 and featured notable winners such as Stephanie Meadow, Maja Stark, and Ewen Ferguson.

Despite the discontinuation of the World Invitational, plans are still underway for Galgorm to host elite events in the future. Gary Henry, the managing director of Galgorm, explained that the decision to end the World Invitational was due to the difficulty of aligning the schedules of the three tours. Originally, the event was supposed to follow the Evian, a Major tournament, but a schedule change caused it to be held after the British Open. This led some players to view the event as a week off after a Major, impacting the women’s field. Additionally, the DP World Tour has reduced the number of events on their schedule, making it less predictable for the men’s field.

Galgorm is currently working on some exciting projects for the future. Henry expressed optimism for upcoming ventures and indicated that the club is looking forward to what lies ahead. Inaugural champion Stephanie Meadow expressed her disappointment at the discontinuation of the event but remained hopeful that it could be revived in the future. She cherished the opportunity to play so close to home in front of local fans and expressed gratitude for the chance to compete in an LPGA event just 20 minutes away from her home.

In other golf news, European Solheim Cup captain Suzann Pettersen has chosen her four wildcards for the upcoming competition. Madelene Sagstrom, Gemma Dryburgh, Caroline Hedwall, and Emily Kristine Pedersen were selected to join the squad, which also includes Cavan’s Leona Maguire. The Solheim Cup will take place at Finca Cortesin in Andalucia, Spain from September 22-24, with Europe hosting the USA.
