Ericsson Teams Up with MediaTek to Test RedCap Data and Voice Calls on 5G Spectrum Bands

Ericsson, in partnership with chipset company MediaTek, has successfully performed data and Voice over New Radio (VoNR) calls using its Reduced Capability (RedCap) solution on both frequency division duplex (FDD) and time division duplex (TDD) spectrum bands. The test, conducted at Ericsson’s lab in Sweden, utilized pre-commercial Ericsson RedCap software and MediaTek’s RedCap testing platform.

During the testing, an FDD data call achieved a downlink throughput speed of 220 Mbps and an uplink speed of 74 Mbps. A TDD data call reached a downlink speed of 153 Mbps and an uplink speed of 13.5 Mbps. These speeds are considered suitable for devices such as wearables and industrial sensors.

The successful interoperability development testing (IoDT) with MediaTek is part of Ericsson’s efforts to build an ecosystem for bringing various types of 5G devices to the market. The RedCap software is expected to be commercially available in November 2023 as a software addition to 5G standalone networks powered by Ericsson, without the need for additional hardware.

Ericsson RedCap focuses on the capabilities required for lower complexity devices in 5G networks, enabling cost-effective and diverse use cases that do not always require the high-performance capabilities of existing 5G technology. It also supports energy optimization procedures to meet the demands of devices with longer battery life.

The collaboration between Ericsson and MediaTek demonstrates the effectiveness of RedCap and assures customers that they can unlock a new generation of innovative 5G products and services. The expanded device ecosystem with RedCap’s capabilities will stimulate the growth of more 5G use cases across various industries.
