Elon Musk’s Starlink to Support Communication Links in Gaza

Elon Musk has announced that his Starlink satellite network will provide support for communication links in Gaza with internationally recognized aid organizations. This announcement came after internet access and phone service were cut off in the region. Musk mentioned on his social media platform, X, that it is unknown who has authority for ground links in Gaza, but no terminal has requested a connection thus far.

The situation in Gaza led to a telephone and internet blackout, isolating its people from the rest of the world. This has made it nearly impossible for individuals to contact loved ones, ambulances, or colleagues elsewhere. The blackout has also been hindering humanitarian organizations from conducting life-saving operations and communicating with their staff on the ground.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a New York Democrat, raised concerns about the impact of cutting communications in Gaza on independent reporters and aid workers. She emphasized that such an act is unacceptable and endangers journalists, medical professionals, humanitarian efforts, and innocent civilians. Additionally, she mentioned that the United States has historically denounced this practice.

In response, Elon Musk stated that Starlink will support connectivity to internationally recognized aid organizations in Gaza. However, it is unclear how organizations in Gaza will be able to access the satellite network, as it requires specialist equipment and there are already limitations on connectivity.

It is also worth noting that during the conflict between Ukraine and Russia in February last year, Starlink satellites reportedly played a critical role in maintaining internet connectivity in some areas despite attempted Russian jamming. Musk previously declined to extend coverage over Russian-occupied Crimea, choosing not to allow his satellites to be used for Ukrainian attacks on Russian forces.

Concerns have been raised about Musk’s influence on US foreign policy, and some have called for the development of alternative technologies to reduce reliance on his private network.
