Elon Musk Offers Starlink to Aid Communication for International Organizations in Gaza

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has stated that he plans to use his satellite communication system, Starlink, to help restore communication to internationally recognized aid organizations in the Gaza Strip. Musk announced on X that “Starlink will support connectivity to internationally recognized aid organizations in Gaza,” but did not provide further details. His statement came in response to a tweet from left-wing politician Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who expressed concern over the interruption of communication with the population in Gaza. Ocasio-Cortez highlighted the risks faced by journalists, medical personnel, humanitarian workers, and innocent civilians.

Multiple international organizations, including the World Health Organization, the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the World Food Programme, Save the Children, and the Norwegian Refugee Council, have reported losing contact with their staff and partners in the Gaza Strip. According to the Palestinian Telecommunications Company, all communication and internet services have been disrupted due to the heavy bombardment by the Israeli army.

Starlink is a satellite internet constellation that aims to provide fast internet connections through its own network of satellites. It also plays a crucial role in Ukraine’s defense against the Russian invasion, facilitating communication for the country.

In addition to the announcement about supporting aid organizations in Gaza, Musk shared an image on X implying aggression from the United States towards Iran. The image features a map with Iran highlighted and US flags surrounding it. The caption accompanying the image sarcastically states, “Iran wants war. Look how close they’re bringing their country to our military bases.” The map also depicts alleged military bases in neighboring Afghanistan, although the US army has withdrawn from the country following the Taliban’s takeover in 2021.

Elon Musk’s offer to provide support through Starlink comes at a time when the Gaza Strip is experiencing severe communication disruptions, raising concerns for the safety and well-being of those in need of assistance.
