Cities and Towns in Gaza Destroyed by Israeli Bombardments

Newly released satellite images have revealed the devastation caused by almost three weeks of Israeli bombardments on cities and towns in Gaza. The pictures, provided by Maxar Technologies and Planet Labs, show apartment buildings crumpled and entire neighborhoods in ruins as a result of Israeli airstrikes.

Israel has vowed to wipe out Hamas, the governing authority in Gaza, in retaliation for attacks on October 7th that resulted in the deaths of 1,400 people and the taking of over 200 hostages. Since then, Israel has launched continuous airstrikes on Gaza, implemented a siege, and is preparing for a ground invasion. The Hamas-run health ministry reports that more than 7,000 people, including many civilians, have been killed in the Israeli bombardment.

The city of Beit Hanoun, located near the northern border with Israel, has been heavily targeted by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). Buildings in Beit Hanoun have been left in various states of collapse, with large chunks missing from some and others broken in half. The heavy bombardment has transformed entire neighborhoods into wastelands of rubble.

In the Al Karameh neighborhood north of Gaza City, images show the remains of destroyed residential buildings. The United Nations has stated that 42% of all housing units in Gaza have been rendered uninhabitable in the past three weeks, with thousands more suffering moderate damage. This has led to a significant increase in the number of displaced people in Gaza, with estimates ranging from 400,000 to a million Palestinians now homeless.

Satellite images of the Al-Atatra area in Beit Lahiya show the widespread ash and rubble resulting from airstrikes that have affected entire neighborhoods. The UN has warned that their fuel supplies are dangerously low, which could hinder the ability of their agencies to provide aid and support in Gaza.

In the Al-Zahra area, closer to Gaza City, Israeli missiles have reportedly flattened more than 20 buildings. Residents are left unsure of where to go or how to protect their families in the aftermath of the strikes.

The continuous airstrikes have caused extensive damage and displacement in Gaza, with the full extent yet to be determined. The destruction of homes and infrastructure has left many Palestinians without shelter and essential services.
