Broadcom and Cisco Enable Standard Power Wi-Fi Operations in Brazil

Broadcom Inc. and Cisco Systems Inc. have successfully implemented the necessary changes for Open Automated Frequency Coordination (AFC) to enable standard power Wi-Fi operations for internet service providers in Brazil. This development paves the way for the use of standard power devices in the 6 GHz band, both indoors and outdoors.

The Wi-Fi 6E Outdoor project in Brazil, involving Broadcom and Cisco, has completed the approval and integration phase of their AFC technologies. This partnership was made possible through collaboration with the Dynamic Spectrum Alliance (DSA) and internet providers associated with ABRINT, an organization representing over 1,800 companies in the sector across all 27 Brazilian states.

The DSA expects ANATEL, the Brazilian National Telecommunications Agency, to soon release the conditions for outdoor use of the 6 GHz band. Once this happens, Brazilians can expect to have wireless broadband access through standard power devices.

President of the DSA, Martha Suarez, expressed optimism about the project and praised Brazil’s leadership in authorizing the use of the 6 GHz band. The Open AFC solution, developed by the Wi-Fi industry, facilitates the operations of small-scale internet providers. It is ready to operate as soon as regulations are established by ANATEL, promising benefits for Brazilians in terms of innovation, new use cases, and economic growth.

The Wi-Fi 6 Outdoor project in Brazil also includes training internet service providers on the AFC system for outdoor use. Broadcom and Cisco, as founders of the Open AFC of the Telecom Infra Project, have designed a fully functional AFC platform using open-source software for this initiative.

This achievement has been welcomed by ABRINT, with its President, Mauricelio Oliveira, expressing excitement about the potential usage of the 6 GHz band by Brazilian ISPs. Cisco, as a longstanding partner in Brazil, is committed to accelerating digitization by enabling more spectrum in the 6 GHz band. Broadcom, on the other hand, is thrilled to collaborate with ABRINT and DSA to enable standard power Wi-Fi operations in Brazil.

The completion of the AFC technology’s approval phase is a significant milestone for Brazil’s Wi-Fi 6 outdoor project, according to Kristian Toivo, Executive Director at the Telecom Infra Project.

The collaborative efforts of industry leaders like Broadcom and Cisco, as well as partnerships with ABRINT and DSA, demonstrate their commitment to enhancing connectivity in Brazil. The next step is ANATEL’s regulatory decisions that will allow the deployment of standard power Wi-Fi devices for indoor and outdoor use in the 6 GHz band.
