Acquisition of TTTBB by AIS unlikely to lead to a monopoly

The acquisition of Triple T Broadband (TTTBB) by Advanced Info Service (AIS), two major players in the telecom and broadband internet markets in Thailand, is not expected to have a significant impact on the market, according to telecom analysts. In fact, some believe that the deal could promote a competitive landscape in the provincial market and improve internet access in schools.

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) is currently reviewing the deal and working on measures to ensure that it provides a choice of broadband service packages to consumers. The deal is being closely watched as it involves two major telecom and broadband internet providers.

The NBTC board has set up four subcommittees to examine the deal, focusing on economic effect, technical effect, legal implications, and consumer benefits. The subcommittee on consumer benefits has completed its study and conducted discussions with fixed broadband service providers. They have also sought the opinions of economic lecturers and the Thailand Development Research Institute, who found that the economic effects of this acquisition would be less significant compared to previous mergers in the industry.

It is believed that the NBTC board will eventually endorse the deal, but may impose remedy measures to protect consumer benefits. The number of fixed broadband service providers in Thailand is greater compared to mobile phone operators, ensuring that there is still competition in the market.

Overall, the acquisition of TTTBB by AIS is not expected to lead to a monopoly or have a detrimental impact on consumers. The deal is seen as an opportunity to improve internet access and promote competition in the telecom market.
