Tropical Storm Hilary to Bring Heavy Rainfall and Flash Flooding to Southern California

Tropical Storm Hilary is forecasted to bring heavy rainfall to Southern California from Sunday to Monday, posing the risk of destructive flash flooding and mudslides. Rainfall totals are expected to range from 2 to 10 inches.

Flash flood warnings have been issued for various areas, including Los Angeles, Long Beach, Glendale, Santa Clarita, Lancaster, Palmdale, Indio, Cathedral City, and Palm Desert. The National Weather Service has advised residents to exercise caution and follow local authorities’ instructions.

As a precautionary measure, all schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District will be closed on Monday, with plans to reopen on Tuesday. Utility companies, such as Southern California Edison, are reporting power outages affecting over 7,300 customers across the region.

Palm Springs has declared a local state of emergency due to unprecedented rainfall and flooding of local roadways. Several roads, including Dinah Shore, Farrell Drive, El Cielo, Araby, and Golf Club Drive, have been closed due to major flooding.

In addition, an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.1 shook the Los Angeles area on Sunday afternoon, coinciding with the heavy rain from Tropical Storm Hilary. However, the National Weather Service has confirmed that there is no tsunami threat for Southern California.

The impact of the storm has also led to disruptions in services. DoorDash has suspended all deliveries in Los Angeles County, and the Ontario Airport has announced flight suspensions.

The City of Long Beach has closed all city-run parks, trails, sports facilities, and beach parking lots as a precautionary measure. The closure will remain in effect until at least Monday noon.

Residents are advised to stay updated on the latest weather conditions and to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
