The Indonesian Government Pushes for Effective Regulations to Drive Digital Innovations in ASEAN

The Indonesian Government is calling for the implementation of effective regulations to optimize the presence of digital innovations in the ASEAN region. This was emphasized by Mira Tayyib, the Secretary General of the Communication and Informatics Ministry, during the 29th ASEAN Telecommunication Regulators Council (ATRC) meeting in Bali.

Tayyib highlighted the key role of developing effective regulations that balance innovation and security, promote inclusivity, maintain competition, and foster global cooperation within regional autonomy. Indonesia, as the chairman of the 29th ATRC meeting, emphasized the importance of a regulation-based framework that has propelled the ASEAN into the digital era.

Tayyib acknowledged the regulatory landscape’s contribution to the facilitation of 5G networks and its support towards a new era of connectivity and innovation. ASEAN countries have collaborated to harmonize spectrum allocation and promote cross-border interoperability, which enables seamless communication and collaboration across the region.

Indonesia expects an effective regulatory framework to be maintained in order to encourage digital transformation within the ASEAN region. This framework is essential for regulating digital innovation, providing solutions, and fostering healthy competition for industry innovators. By establishing a clear legal framework for intellectual property rights, creating innovation hubs, and supporting start-ups, ASEAN can develop a dynamic ecosystem that remains at the forefront of global technological advances.

Tayyib also emphasized the importance of addressing the challenges presented by the digital revolution, particularly in areas such as cybersecurity and data privacy. Regulatory development should prioritize strong cybersecurity measures and comprehensive data protection regulations to ensure a safe and secure digital environment for businesses and society.

The 29th ATRC meeting, attended by delegations from ASEAN member countries, the ASEAN Secretariat, and the Director of the ASEAN ICT Center (AICTC), further demonstrated ASEAN’s commitment to digital integration and the protection of data and privacy.
