The Impact of Israeli Military Assault on Gaza Strip

The Israeli military has caused extensive destruction in the Gaza Strip, resulting in the loss of nearly 200,000 housing units since the latest assault began. The assault was a response to Hamas’s surprise attack on October 7th. Mohammed Ziyara, the Palestinian minister of public works and housing, has expressed concerns over the devastating impact of the bombardment on families, neighborhoods, and residential communities.

The destruction caused by the Israeli military goes beyond housing units. Facilities including hospitals, places of worship, bakeries, water filling stations, markets, schools, and educational institutions have also been destroyed. These attacks have left the Gaza Strip, which is home to approximately 2.3 million people, in ruins.

According to the UN’s humanitarian office, around 45 percent of all housing units in the enclave have been damaged or destroyed due to the Israeli attacks. Areas such as Beit Hanoon, Beit Lahiya, Shujaiya, the neighborhoods surrounding the Shati refugee camp, and Abasan al-Kabira in Khan Younis have been hit the hardest.

The ongoing bombardment has resulted in approximately 1.4 million people being internally displaced in Gaza. Many of them have sought shelter in 150 UN-designated emergency shelters. This mass displacement has created a humanitarian crisis in the region.

In addition to the destruction caused by the military assault, Israel’s blockade on fuel entering the enclave has had severe consequences. Critical functions in hospitals are being seriously affected, putting the lives of at least 130 premature babies in incubators, 1,000 kidney dialysis patients, and front-line ambulance workers at risk. The lack of fuel hampers their ability to access necessary medical care and jeopardizes lives.

It is important to note that Israel has maintained strict control over Gaza since 2007, limiting airspace and territorial waters and imposing restrictions on the movement of goods and people in and out of the enclave. This longstanding control has exacerbated the difficulties facing the people of Gaza and has contributed to the dire situation they currently face.

The situation in the Gaza Strip calls for urgent attention and action to alleviate the suffering of its people and to find a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
