The FBI Seeks Public Assistance in Identifying Victims of Former Boy Scouts Leader

The FBI is asking for the public’s help in identifying potential victims after a former Boy Scouts leader from Omaha was arrested for allegedly attempting to meet a 13-year-old girl for sex. John Shores, a 54-year-old man who was an active Scoutmaster, now faces charges of attempted child enticement and attempted sexual exploitation of a minor.

According to evidence presented in federal court, Shores initiated contact with an individual he believed to be a 13-year-old girl after replying to an online post. He repeatedly asked the girl to meet up and offered to buy her alcohol. Shores also sent explicit materials to the undercover officer and requested explicit photos in return.

When the girl expressed concern about her age, Shores allegedly responded that he was okay with it unless she was a police officer trying to entrap him. Prosecutors argued that Shores posed a danger to the community, highlighting his role as an authority figure who regularly interacted with over 100 children each week.

Despite the prosecution’s concerns, U.S. Magistrate Judge Susan Bazis ordered Shores to be released on conditions including GPS monitoring and a restriction from having contact with minors, including family members. The Boy Scouts have severed all ties with Shores since his arrest.

The FBI Omaha field office issued a statement requesting assistance from the public in identifying any additional victims of Shores. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the office.

These allegations serve as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and reporting any suspicious behavior to the appropriate authorities.
