Tata Play launches GSAT-24 satellite to enhance DTH services in India

Tata Play, in collaboration with NSIL, successfully launched the GSAT-24 satellite in June 2022, aligning with the government’s Make in India vision. The satellite is now in its orbital position and will be used by Tata Play starting today. This increased bandwidth will enable Tata Play to deliver higher picture and sound quality to its users, as well as accommodate 50% more channels. As a result, Tata Play becomes the largest satellite bandwidth provider among all DTH platforms.

The inauguration ceremony took place at Tata Play’s Broadcast Centre in Chhatarpur, New Delhi. Shri. Apurva Chandra, Secretary Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, expressed his pleasure and congratulated DoS and Tata Play for successfully commissioning GSAT-24. He stated that this event represents another step towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) and demonstrates India’s growth in the field of space and communication.

Shri. S. Somanath, Chairman ISRO, highlighted that GSAT-24, a 4-tonne class communication satellite built by ISRO for DTH services, is fully operational at its maximum satellite capacity after extensive in-orbit testing. This achievement signifies a telecommunications revolution in India, driven by advanced indigenous technology. It also showcases India’s aerospace prowess and successful foray into the Demand Driven Mission segment.

Shri. Radhakrishnan Durairaj, Chairman and Managing Director of NSIL, mentioned that GSAT-24 is the first Demand Driven communication satellite mission undertaken by NSIL following space sector reforms. He emphasized that the satellite will usher in a new era of satellite television for India, supporting domestic broadcasting services with advanced digital TV transmission capabilities. He congratulated the teams of NSIL, ISRO, and Tata Play for their successful collaboration on this project.

Tata Play’s MD & CEO, Harit Nagpal, emphasized that the viewing experience has always been a priority for Tata Play. This collaboration with NSIL will enhance the video and audio quality for DTH subscribers, offering more channels and services. Additionally, it reaffirms Tata Play’s commitment to Make in India, as all their services are delivered on domestically produced satellites by DoS.

GSAT-24 is a 24-Ku band communication satellite launched by the Indian government specifically to meet the requirements of Tata Play’s DTH applications. NSIL, established in March 2019, is a Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) under the Department of Space (DoS) and serves as the commercial arm of DoS. The entire satellite capacity on GSAT-24 is leased to Tata Play, demonstrating the strong partnership between the two entities.
