SpaceX Falcon 9 Rocket Set to Launch Starlink Internet Satellites

SpaceX is scheduled to launch a Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. The launch, originally targeted for 7:45 p.m. EDT, has now been pushed to 8:17 p.m. If there are further delays, five backup launch opportunities are available later in the evening.

The mission, called Starlink 6-25, will see the Falcon 9 deploy a batch of 23 Starlink internet satellites into orbit. These satellites are packed inside the rocket’s payload fairing. Unlike previous launches, no local sonic booms are expected from this mission.

After liftoff, the first stage booster of the Falcon 9 will attempt to land on a drone ship in the sea approximately 8½ minutes after launch. This landing is an important aspect of SpaceX’s goal to reuse rockets and reduce the associated costs of spaceflight.

The Space Force’s 45th Weather Squadron has indicated an 85% chance of favorable launch weather. While there were initially concerns about windy conditions and steep seas caused by Tropical Cyclone Tammy, these conditions are expected to diminish by the time of the launch window.

In other news related to space launches from Florida’s Space Coast, the next scheduled launch is NASA’s SpaceX CRS-29 mission. This cargo resupply mission to the International Space Station is set to take place on November 5th at 10:01 p.m. EDT from Kennedy Space Center’s Pad 39A.

The CRS-29 mission will be SpaceX’s 29th commercial resupply mission for NASA, delivering new science investigations, food, supplies, and equipment to the crew on the space station. The research includes studies on laser communications and understanding the interactions between Earth’s weather and space.

Coverage of the SpaceX Falcon 9 launch can be followed live on the FLORIDA TODAY Space Team’s webpage. When available, SpaceX’s live webcast, hosted on X (formerly Twitter), will be posted at the top of the page.
