Santa Barbara County Deploys Mobile Resource Center for Farmworkers

Santa Barbara County has introduced Proyecto Campesino, a mobile resource center designed to support farmworkers and their employers. The office on wheels aims to bring essential resources directly to the agricultural community.

Driven by a dedicated team, the mobile resource center, a vibrant van adorned with images of local farmworkers, will travel throughout the county to meet farmworkers and their families in convenient locations such as parks, local shops, and fields. Cesar Guerrero, the Program Coordinator, emphasized that the primary goal is to connect farmworkers with essential services such as medical assistance, financial support, and educational opportunities.

Equipped with computers, internet access, printers, and a multilingual staff, the van ensures that assistance is provided in English, Spanish, and Mixteco. Moreover, Guerrero added that they have partnered with an agency that can offer assistance in various regional dialects as well.

The office-on-wheels is designed to facilitate larger training sessions and informative gatherings. It features a large screen, folding chairs, and a retractable sunshade. Guerrero mentioned that his team will collaborate with farmworkers and their employers to plan and schedule visits accordingly.

In addition to regular support, the mobile resource center is prepared to respond to emergencies and natural disasters. Guerrero highlighted that during critical situations like floods, the center will set up at emergency stations to provide necessities such as food and shelter.

Operating under the Santa Barbara County Department of Social Services, the Farmworker Resource Center will cater to the entire county. It is estimated that the center will reach around 8,000 families in its initial year of service. With its comprehensive services and convenient approach, Proyecto Campesino aims to improve the well-being and livelihoods of farmworkers in Santa Barbara County.
