A planning application has been submitted to Scottish Borders Council for the installation of a 40-metre-high telecoms mast in Hawick Forest. Berkshire-based Cornerstone, a leading mobile infrastructure services company in the UK, is behind the proposal.

The mast will be a lightweight lattice structure and will support six radio antennas and four transmission dishes. It will also include an electrical generator at the Fire Observation Tower at Crib Law in Craik Forest. However, to accommodate this development, some trees along the adjoining access track will need to be removed or cut back.

This project is part of the Shared Rural Network (SRN), a government-backed scheme aimed at improving 4G coverage in rural areas with limited connectivity. The SRN is a collaboration between Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) VMO2, Vodafone, and Three, who are working together with the government to enhance mobile coverage for those living, working, and traveling through poorly served rural regions.

The installation of this telecoms mast in Hawick Forest is a significant step towards achieving the SRN’s objectives. It will help bridge the connectivity gap in rural areas, providing improved mobile services for residents, businesses, and travelers.
