North Korea Fails Second Attempt to Launch Spy Satellite, Plans Third Try in October

North Korea recently attempted to launch a spy satellite for the second time, but the mission was unsuccessful. The state media announced that they will make another attempt in October. The satellite, called Malligyong-1, was launched using the Chollima-1 rocket. While the first and second stages of the rocket’s flight were normal, an error in the emergency blasting system during the third-stage flight caused the launch to fail.

The North Korean space agency stated that they will assess the reason for the failure and make necessary adjustments for the third launch attempt. They believe that the cascade engines and the overall system reliability are not major issues. This development has been reported by the governments of South Korea and Japan.

North Korea is striving to develop a space-based surveillance system to monitor U.S. and South Korean military movements more effectively. The country had informed the Japanese Coast Guard that the launch would take place between August 24 and 31. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had expressed determination for a second launch attempt after the first one on May 31 ended in failure, with the rocket crashing into the sea shortly after liftoff.

The failure of the first launch was acknowledged by North Korea as a serious setback in its efforts to advance its weapons programs. The South Korean military found no military utility in the wreckage from the satellite and rocket. The United States, South Korea, and Japan strongly condemned the May launch, considering it a violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions that prohibit North Korea from using ballistic missile technology.

The latest launch attempt coincides with the annual military exercises conducted by the U.S. and South Korea. North Korea sees these exercises as a potential rehearsal for invasion, although the two allies deny this claim. North Korea has denounced the exercises and warned of an increased risk of nuclear war on the Korean Peninsula. In response, they recently test-fired strategic cruise missiles, as reported by KCNA.
