NCC Defends Mafab Communications Amid Lack of 5G Product or Service

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has come under scrutiny for defending Mafab Communications, a new player in the 5G market, despite the operator’s lack of any product or service as of Monday.

In a statement issued on August 2, the NCC refuted claims that Mafab Communications had yet to roll out its services, stating that the company had launched its services in Abuja on January 24, 2023, and in Lagos on January 26. The services were initially targeted at six cities in Nigeria.

BusinessDay, along with other media houses, attended the said launch in January. However, Mushabu Muhammadu Bashir, chairman of Mafab Communications, confirmed that although the company held a launch ceremony, the service was not yet available in the market. It was expected to go live in the following weeks.

Despite the NCC’s defense and the passage of more than seven months since the launch, Mafab Communications still does not have a commercial product in the market for its 5G network. The company’s website remains outdated, with none of the icons on the homepage leading to any pages. There is also no information available on where to purchase the company’s data plans.

BusinessDay attempted to reach out to Bashir for comment, but received no response. This lack of transparency has led to doubts among the public regarding the legitimacy of Mafab Communications as a 5G player in the market.

As the discussion surrounding Mafab’s absence of a 5G product or service continues, questions remain about the NCC’s defense and the company’s ability to fulfill its obligations as a licensed operator.
