Los Angeles School Officials Launch Review of 1,000 Campuses Closed Due to Tropical Storm Hilary

Los Angeles school officials have initiated a comprehensive review of the approximately 1,000 campuses that were closed in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Hilary. With the closure of schools, parents are facing challenges in arranging childcare services, while teachers are posting assignments online for students to continue their learning.

To address the issue of regular meals for students, the L.A. Unified School District is establishing 13 locations where parents can pick up food between 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. The school system plays a significant role in providing nutrition, as 80% of students qualify for free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch, and sometimes dinner as well.

Teachers have been instructed to work from home and have assignments ready for students by 10:30 a.m. The closure of schools has forced parents to find alternative childcare options, and many are resorting to allowing their children to have a more relaxed day, with activities such as watching TV.

Several school districts in L.A. County, including Pasadena Unified, Lancaster, and Keppel Union, made the decision to close for the day. In Riverside County, Palm Springs schools also remained closed. The L.A. Unified School District schools did not experience significant storm damage, but some campuses faced challenges due to difficulties in morning access, including disrupted internet and phone service.

A few universities in the region, such as Cal State Los Angeles, Cal State Fullerton, and San Diego State, canceled their first day of fall classes or shifted to virtual instruction. UC campuses in Southern California have yet to commence their classes.

Despite the criticism, Superintendent Alberto Carvalho defended the decision to close schools and stated that safety inspections that could not have taken place overnight were necessary. He emphasized that the district is well-prepared for short-term closures due to its pandemic experience. However, Carvalho acknowledged that completing schoolwork may be challenging for some students.

Schools in Los Angeles are expected to resume their normal schedules on Tuesday.
