JioSpaceFiber: India’s First Satellite-Based Internet Service

JioSpaceFiber, India’s first satellite-based giga fibre Internet service, was demonstrated at the 2023 India Mobile Congress. This service is aimed at providing Internet access in areas where traditional networks are not available. JioSpaceFiber will be competing with other satellite internet service providers in the country, including OneWeb, Project Kuiper, and Starlink.

Jio has already connected four remote locations in India with its JioSpaceFiber service. These locations are Gir in Gujarat, Korba in Chattisgarh, Nabrangpur in Odisha, and ONGC-Jorhat in Assam. However, the company has not yet announced a timeline for the launch of the service for customers or its pricing.

JioSpaceFiber will rely on Luxembourg-based satellite telecommunications network provider Société Européenne des Satellites (SES). The service will utilize SES’s medium earth orbit (MEO) satellites, including the O3b and new O3b mPOWER satellites, to provide gigabit-level Internet access.

Jio Chairman Akash Ambani stated that JioSpaceFiber aims to expand Internet access to millions of homes and businesses in India who are not yet connected. The service will help Jio reach more customers and establish itself as one of the leading providers of fibre-grade Internet services in remote regions.

While there is no official launch date announced yet, JioSpaceFiber will eventually compete with other satellite internet service providers like OneWeb (Bharti), Project Kuiper (Amazon), and Starlink (SpaceX). This service will play a crucial role in bridging the digital divide and bringing reliable Internet connectivity to underserved areas in India.
