India’s First Satellite-Based Giga-Fibre Service Showcased by Reliance Jio

Reliance Jio has successfully demonstrated India’s first satellite-based giga-fibre service at the ‘India Mobile Congress 2023’ with the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The service, known as JioSpaceFiber, aims to provide high-speed and affordable internet access in inaccessible areas of the country.

In collaboration with Luxembourg-based satellite telecommunications network provider SES, Jio is utilizing the latest medium earth orbit (MEO) satellite technology. This technology allows for the delivery of gigabit, fibre-like services from space. JioSpaceFiber enables connectivity to millions of people who are currently unconnected.

According to Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd., JioSpaceFiber will provide gigabit access to online government services, education, healthcare, and entertainment. Currently, Jio serves over 450 million consumers with high-speed broadband fixed-line and wireless services.

The satellite network will not only provide internet access but also support additional capacity for mobile backhaul. This will enhance the availability and scale of Jio True5G even in the most remote areas of the country.

JioSpaceFiber has already connected four of the remotest locations in India: Gir, Gujarat; Korba, Chhattisgarh; Nabarangpur, Odisha; and ONGC-Jorhat, Assam. These connections are part of the government’s ‘Digital India’ initiative.

John-Paul Hemingway, Chief Strategy Officer at SES, expressed their honor in supporting the initiative. He highlighted that their fibre-like services from space are already deployed in parts of India, and they look forward to witnessing the digital transformation in rural areas.

Through JioSpaceFiber, Reliance Jio aims to bridge the digital divide and provide internet access to even the most remote parts of the country, enabling them to fully participate in the new digital society.
