Haryana Blames Punjab for Delhi’s Poor Air Quality

On October 27th, Delhi’s air quality index (AQI) fell into the “very poor” category with a registered AQI of 309. The Haryana government has released a satellite image from NASA, claiming that neighboring Punjab is responsible for the deteriorating air quality in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR).

Both Haryana and Punjab have been at odds over the issue of stubble burning, which is considered a major contributor to the worsening air quality in Delhi and the NCR. Despite both states claiming to have seen a significant decrease in farm fires, satellite images from NASA show a cluster of red dots indicating a rise in stubble burning in Punjab.

Jawahar Yadav, the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) for Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, criticized Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for his silence on the NASA data, implying that it raises suspicions. Haryana claims that stubble burning in Punjab has occurred more than double the rate in Haryana.

According to official data cited by Times Now, Haryana has seen a 36% decline in farm fires this year. The National Green Tribunal has identified stubble burning in Punjab during autumn as one of the biggest contributors to pollution in the NCR. The tribunal has called for authorities to be vigilant in identifying violators and imposing penalties during the period when stubble burning occurs from September 15th to November 30th.

On October 25th, Delhi minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi stated that there was no official data available to determine the different sources contributing to pollution in Delhi. In the past, both Atishi and Arvind Kejriwal have blamed stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana for the pollution in Delhi.
