Government to Use Satellite Internet Providers as Temporary Solution for Areas with Poor Connectivity

The government of Malaysia has decided to utilize satellite Internet providers, such as Starlink, in areas that have inadequate Internet access. While awaiting long-term solutions, the government sees this as a temporary measure to address the issue. Communications and Digital Minister, Fahmi Fadzil, explained that satellite Internet services offer fast speeds, reasonable pricing, and are conveniently plug-and-play. Currently, there are four satellite Internet providers operating in Malaysia, including Starlink.

The decision to use satellite Internet is not a commercial one, but rather a strategic move by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to leverage the benefits of this technology. The government is also in discussions to expand satellite Internet technology to schools and health clinics in Sabah and Sarawak. These discussions involve the Health Minister, Education Minister, and Rural and Regional Development Minister.

In a meeting with Starlink CEO Elon Musk, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced a plan to install 40 satellite Internet devices from Starlink at higher education institutions nationwide. This initiative aims to assist students who are facing difficulties in their studies due to unreliable Internet connectivity.

Furthermore, the Communications and Digital Minister highlighted that several telecommunication service providers will be offering 5G Rahmah Internet packages at a discounted price or with increased data capacity. The base price for these packages is set at RM60. The 5G Rahmah package includes a smartphone 5G data device bundle plan, where smartphones such as Samsung A14 5G and Honor 90 Lite 5G will be available for as low as RM240. This bundle also includes a 60GB data plan worth RM60 per month. The plan is expected to be launched on August 31.
