Google Messages Working on Emergency SOS Capability via Satellite Connection

Google Messages, a widely-used messaging app, is currently in the process of incorporating an Emergency SOS capability through a satellite connection. User interfaces have been added to facilitate conversations and SOS messages using satellite links.

Recent observations have revealed the integration of Satellite Communication APIs into Android 14. However, these APIs are currently hidden and inaccessible to third-party applications. A “demo mode” for satellite services is also expected, which will allow the transmission of SOS messages and location sharing.

The effectiveness of the Emergency SOS feature on iPhones has already been demonstrated in situations such as the Maui wildfire, proving its potential to save lives. Considering this, Google’s plan to introduce satellite support within Android 14 comes as no surprise. The inclusion of this feature in Google Messages, being the default messaging app on many Android devices, holds significant importance, as it eliminates the need for a separate messaging platform for satellite-enabled smartphones.

The current emergency SOS functionality in Google Messages is still in its initial phases and serves as a temporary solution. As Google reveals more details about cellular security features in Android 14 and releases the final version, additional information regarding the emergency SOS functionality is expected.
