Ghana to Host 12th African Peering and Interconnection Forum

Ghana is preparing for the 12th edition of the African Peering and Interconnection Forum (AfPIF), which will be held in the city of Accra. The event, scheduled for August 22nd to 24th, 2023, aims to foster interconnection between Internet service providers, content providers, and data centers across Africa.

AfPIF is an annual conference organized by the Internet Society (ISOC) and the African IXP Association (AFIX). Its goal is to increase Internet content and traffic exchanged locally in Africa. This is achieved through Internet exchange points (IXPs), which allow multiple networks to interconnect directly. By aggregating networks, large-scale content distribution is facilitated, improving the speed, cost-effectiveness, and reliability of the Internet, and reducing reliance on international intermediaries.

MainOne, an Equinix Company, will host this year’s AfPIF event in Accra, Ghana. The Country Manager of MainOne, Emmanuel Kwarteng, expressed enthusiasm about the event, highlighting its alignment with MainOne’s mission to drive digital inclusivity in the region by facilitating the localization of Africa’s internet traffic.

AfPIF provides a unique platform for participants to exchange insights, discuss emerging trends, and foster collaboration. The conference will feature keynote addresses, panel discussions, technical sessions, and networking opportunities.

The African IXP Association’s Executive Director, Kyle Spencer, emphasized AfPIF’s role as a catalyst for enhancing interconnection and peering in Africa. He believes that encouraging the local exchange of Internet traffic contributes significantly to the growth of the African digital ecosystem, driving economic progress and empowering communities.

Overall, the AfPIF conference offers attendees the opportunity to gain insights into industry trends, network with experts, and explore peering and interconnection opportunities in the African landscape.
