Gaza Faces Communications Blackout as Israeli Attacks Continue

A comprehensive communications blackout has severely impacted medical staff in Gaza, hindering their ability to reach the injured and for hospitals to communicate with each other. Dr. Mohamad Al-Rayan, a physician at Al Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in central Gaza, reported significant delays in reaching those injured by Israeli airstrikes. The paramedics were unable to reach the injured due to the lack of communication, resulting in a slow and dangerous situation. The injured arrived at the hospital many hours later, as immediate and direct assistance was not possible.

Furthermore, Dr. Al-Rayan emphasized that hospitals in Gaza had also lost contact with one another, making it difficult to transfer patients requiring specialist surgery between hospitals. Additional reports confirmed that Israeli artillery shelling continued unabated in central Gaza, causing further casualties.

The blackout has not only affected medical staff but also the families residing in Gaza. Ibrahim Dahman, a producer for CNN in Gaza, expressed his difficulty in reaching his relatives amidst the communication blackout. In his voice recordings, Dahman highlighted his concern, fearing that he may not be aware if his loved ones had been harmed or killed. Since October 9, due to the ongoing conflict, Dahman has relied on WhatsApp to communicate, but with the internet services also disrupted, he feels even more isolated.

Both Jawwal and Ooredoo, mobile phone companies operating in Gaza, as well as Paltel, a fixed-line operator, acknowledged that their services remained down throughout the strip. The absence of communication continues to heighten tension and uncertainty among the people of Gaza, leaving them in a state of fear and distress.
