Extent of Damage Revealed After Rare Tropical Storm Hits Southern California

Dramatic photos taken from space have revealed the extent of the damage caused by a rare tropical storm that ripped through southern California. Despite no reported deaths or serious injuries, officials have warned of remaining risks, especially in mountainous regions where mudslides may occur.

Tropical Storm Hilary, the first of its kind to hit the south of California in 84 years, moved north towards the Rocky Mountains. Crews have been diligently working to clear roads, buildings, and care home residents out of the mud in affected areas across the southwest.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami stated that although Hilary had weakened significantly as it approached the Rocky Mountains, it still posed the threat of “continued life-threatening and locally catastrophic flooding” in certain regions. Forecasters have indicated that the highest risk for flooding on Monday was in southeastern Oregon and the west-central mountains of Idaho, with the potential for thunderstorms and heavy rain on Tuesday.

One captivating scene captured in photographs showcased rescue officials in Cathedral City, near Palm Springs, driving a bulldozer through the mud to reach a swamped care home. They successfully rescued 14 residents by scooping them up and carrying them to safety, according to Fire Chief Michael Contreras.

The satellite shots displayed the visible damage caused by the storm, with significant amounts of mud and road damage observed from above. Efforts are ongoing to assess the full impact of the storm and the necessary measures to ensure the safety and recovery of affected areas.
