Ensuring Quality of Service in 5G Networks: TRAI Official

As telecom operators continue to expand their 5G networks throughout India, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) emphasizes the importance of maintaining a high-quality service. Meenakshi Gupta, a member of TRAI, emphasized that as networks expand and coverage increases, the quality of service should not suffer. Maintaining a high-quality service is crucial for building trust with consumers and ensuring utility.

Gupta explained that the quality of service requirements for 5G networks can be determined by factors such as enhanced mobile broadband services, low latency communications, and high device density. While 4G standards support assured quality of service, the actual user experience may not always be satisfactory. On the other hand, emerging applications, such as gaming and augmented reality, have more stringent requirements and demand unlimited bandwidth.

It is essential for 5G networks to provide consistent quality of service and user experience, regardless of the number of consumers using the network at any given time. Allocating common resources to high-priority services should not impact the quality of service of other types of services.

Gupta emphasized the importance of meeting quality of service requirements, especially for critical use cases like remote surgery. TRAI believes that quality of service should be ingrained in each layer of every network segment to achieve the required level of performance.

To improve the consumer experience, TRAI has proposed stringent performance benchmarks for telecom operators, including parameters for 5G services. While the regulatory body has floated a consultation paper on quality of service norms, it aims to ensure that quality of service is not seen as an incidental outcome of network implementation.

As the country progresses towards wider adoption of 5G technology, maintaining a high-quality service will be crucial in meeting the demands of emerging applications and critical use cases.
