Emergency SOS via Satellite Now Available on iPhone 14 Lineup in the US and Canada

Apple has launched its Emergency SOS via satellite service for iPhone 14 users in the US and Canada. This ground-breaking technology allows users to connect with emergency services even when they are outside cellular and Wi-Fi coverage. Users can also share their location via satellite through the Find My app, assuring friends and family of their whereabouts when off the grid. This service will be available in France, Germany, Ireland, and the UK starting December.

The iPhone 14 lineup, including iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max, has been equipped with custom-designed components and integrated software that enables direct satellite connectivity. Emergency SOS via satellite enhances existing features such as Emergency SOS, Medical ID, emergency contacts, and Find My location sharing. It offers a comprehensive approach to sharing critical information with emergency services, family, and friends. Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) can now connect to more iPhone users in emergency situations without the need for additional software or protocols.

This service works by presenting users with an easy-to-use interface when they are unable to reach emergency services due to lack of cellular or Wi-Fi coverage. A short questionnaire helps users answer vital questions, and the information is transmitted to dispatchers along with location and other relevant details. This message is then relayed to emergency services or relay centers with Apple-trained specialists who can contact PSAPs on the user’s behalf.

Apple has developed custom components and software to ensure seamless connectivity with satellites. A text compression algorithm has also been implemented to make message transmission faster. Users can send and receive messages in as little as 15 seconds in clear conditions.

Emergency SOS via satellite is not only beneficial for those living in remote areas without cellular coverage but also for those caught in the path of natural disasters. This new Apple service aims to provide users with peace of mind and improve their safety in emergency situations.
