Residents of East Anglia were treated to a mysterious sight recently, leading to speculation about aliens and asteroids. However, the truth behind the spectacle was far less otherworldly. The line of more than 20 individual lights that dotted the skies across the county were actually a result of Elon Musk’s Space X Starlink satellite.

Space X began launching Starlink satellites in 2019 with the goal of providing internet coverage to even the most rural parts of the world. By sending thousands of small satellites into orbit, these satellites beam down broadband signals to areas without strong cable connections. In fact, they are currently being used in UK government trials to connect areas with limited internet access.

Elon Musk’s project has made significant progress since its launch, with around 5,000 satellites in the skies as of August 2023. While the Starlink satellites can be visible with the naked eye, the recent sightings in East Anglia were particularly clear. Typically, the satellites are easiest to spot within a day or two of their launch, but once they reach their intended height of 342 miles above the ground, they become much more difficult to see.

Norfolk, in particular, had a prime viewing of the satellites as they traveled from southwest to east. While some may have been startled by the peculiar lights in the sky, they were indeed the result of Elon Musk’s ambitious project to bring internet connectivity to remote areas. The trials in Norfolk and other areas aim to find a cost-effective solution to connect these far-flung locations, making quality internet connections accessible to all.
