Devastation in Northern Gaza Visible from Space

Apartment buildings are crumpled, neighborhoods lie in ruins, and the terrain has been transformed into a moonscape. The destruction of areas in northern Gaza following Israeli airstrikes can be seen in satellite images taken before and after the attacks. These airstrikes were in response to raids carried out by Hamas militants on October 7.

Satellite images captured by Maxar Technologies on Saturday reveal the extent of the damage. In the Izbat Beit Hanoun neighborhood, four- and five-story buildings are in various states of collapse. Some buildings have chunks missing, while others are broken in half. In piles of rubble, two large complexes can be seen.

The Al Karameh neighborhood also shows a pattern of destruction, visible in the widespread ashes. Tightly packed streets in Beit Hanoun appear obliterated, with a rare white structure standing out among the gray wasteland.

The war between Israel and Gaza has resulted in thousands of airstrikes by Israel. It began after a cross-border raid that killed 1,400 people in Israel and took over 200 others hostage. Since the fighting erupted, Palestinian health officials report that over 7,000 people in Gaza have been killed.

The airstrikes continue without pause, and the full extent of the damage is still unknown. However, the satellite photos offer a glimpse into the devastation, particularly in the hard-hit northern Gaza Strip.
