Aligarh Muslim University Launches Satellite Project

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has initiated its ambitious satellite program. The project, named ‘SS AMU SAT’ after the university’s founder Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, has received approval from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (IN-SPACe) to work under the Department of Space.

The SS AMU SAT is a nano-satellite project that was started under the AMU Robo Club in November 2021. The satellite, which is a 3U CubeSat, serves several purposes. It includes the use of satellite imagery for studying economic development in India’s poorest districts and implementing in-house developed image compression techniques for rapid multimedia transmission.

The project proposal for the approval, registration, frequency allocation, and launch of SS AMU SAT was presented to IN-SPACe in January 2023. In September 2023, the Student Satellite Committee, under the chairmanship of Dr. P.K. Jain, Director of IN-SPACe, reviewed the design and approved the proposal with the condition that AMU signs a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IN-SPACe for all activities, from the development of SS AMU SAT to its launch into low Earth orbit.

The team of students involved in the project is being led by Purvi Varshney, and they are being guided by Dr. C.A. Prabhakar (former Project Director, ISRO) and Faraz Ahmad (alumnus of the 2013 batch). The project has received technical support from former AMU students working with ISRO and several industrial experts from around the world. The launch of this project is scheduled to take place in six months.
