Weekly Space Recap: August 14 – August 20

Here are some of the stories from the past week in the space industry. Russia’s Luna 25 mission, which aimed to land on the Moon’s southern pole, experienced a failure and crashed into the Moon. This was Russia’s first mission to the Moon in 47 years. The Lunar lander had made it into a stable orbit but went off course during a planned maneuver, creating new craters on the Moon’s surface.

Meanwhile, India’s Chandrayaan-3 lunar lander is progressing well and is scheduled to attempt a landing on the Moon’s Southern Hemisphere on August 23rd.

SpaceX made headlines with their Starlink missions. They launched 22 Starlink satellites, bringing the total number of satellites launched to 4,962. They also attempted back-to-back Starlink launches but had to postpone one due to Hurricane Hilary. The launch is now planned for August 21st.

Crew 7 preparations for launch to the International Space Station are underway. The Crew Dragon Endurance capsule, flying for the third time, has been delivered for attachment to the Falcon 9 rocket. The launch is scheduled for August 25th.

In addition, SpaceX revealed their new hot stage ring for the Starship. This ring allows for stage separation during the second test flight, with the Raptor engines igniting while still attached to Booster 9.

Upcoming events include India’s Chandrayaan-3 mission attempting a Moon landing, Crew 7 launching to the International Space Station, and more Starlink launches.

That’s all for last week’s space recap. Stay tuned for more exciting developments in the space industry.
